High Talking Chief Logoai Siaki Logoai of Fitiuta, Manua, passed away in Washington State where he was undergoing medical treatment. Logoai is a former senator and former Chief Associate Judge of the High Court.

He entered the Senate in January 2019 to fill the vacancy created by the passing of the late Paramount Chief Galeai Tuufuli. He was the Chief Associate Judge of the High Court before he retired and, in that role, was often in the Senate to administer the oath of office for senators.

He served as Manu’a District #1 Senator from 2019 to 2021, and was very vocal on issues pertaining to the culture, health, education, retirement and the justice system.

He was outspoken during the COVID pandemic, adamant that the Coronavirus Task Force—at the time—should not allow anyone traveling from Hawaii into the territory, except for FEMA officials.

He complained that mothers, fathers and children, of American Samoa who had been stuck in Hawaii had been crying to come home but they were being kept out, yet the Governor and Task force were letting veterans return home.

He was also critical of the slow progress of construction of the Fono building.

One of his suggestions, during his tenure as senator, was to open membership of the Retirement Fund to the private sector as a way to resolve the Fund’s unfunded liability.

HTC Logoai was 79. KHJ News extends deepest sympathies to his wife, children, and grandchildren for their loss.
