Turning plastic into art pieces

It’s been a fun and productive two days for participants of a workshop that’s teaching how to make arts and crafts out of plastic. The workshop is organized by the American Samoa Visitors Bureau and the South Pacific Tourism Organization, which sponsored an artist from Fiji to teach it.

Instructor Warwick Marlow says he dropped out of high school and looked to the arts to earn a living. His talents were recognized by the SPTO, which now sends him to different parts of the Pacific to hold workshops like the one he’s leading here.

Marlow’s family has ties to American Samoa. His Dad worked in the territory with Air New Zealand in 1968, so coming here has been very special for him.

One of the participants, Mona Uli, says she has learned new skills which she will immediately put to good use.

The participants have made earrings, bangles, necklaces, purses, lampshades, ornaments and other items. They will display their work at 10am tomorrow, Wednesday, at the ASPA conference room.

The plastic repurposing workshop helps the environment and gives participants new skills.
