Private schools in the territory have been informed by the American Samoa Department of Education that this coming school year will be the last time that teachers in their schools will be paid through the Consolidated Grant from the US Department of Education.
The private schools predict hard times ahead if this funding is discontinued.
All teachers who are paid by ASDOE through the Consolidated Grant go through the ASG/DOE employment process. ASDOE hires them but they teach in private schools and are there to address remediation and, also, work as aides to teachers within the core classes, especially Math and English Language Arts.
According to private school principals who spoke with KHJ News, all they’ve been told is that USDOE is changing the rules and has said that after this next school year, Consolidated Grant funding can no longer be used to pay private school teachers.
An association of private school principals have been discussing the issue and are hoping that ASG will resolve the funding issue with USDOE, because it will negatively impact their schools.
