The Chief Medical Officer of the LBJ Hospital, Dr. Joseph Shumway, is willing to retract and apologize for part of his recent statement concerning the measles cases being fake. Specifically the part where he said that the declaration of the measles outbreak was an efforts by DOH and ASG to steal from the US Government.
LBJ CEO Dr Akapusi Ledua said Dr Shumway has acknowledged this was a “misstatement, was incorrect” and he can retract and apologize for the comments, in an attempt to reconcile with the LBJ Hospital Board.
Dr Shumway is standing by his comments that the measles cases which were labeled positive were false positive and the measles outbreak was based on fake measles cases.
The CMO, who is on suspension, is waiting for a response from the board on his request for an appeal of his suspension.
He said the request was made to the Board in the presence of Dr Ledua and Director of Human Resources Rowena Reid.
Dr Shumway told KHJ News that as of yesterday he has not received any information or acknowledgement of his appeal.
Meanwhile he is waiting for the board to clear up a statement that the Chairman of the Board Dr Malouamaua Tuiolosega made to the Senate at a recent hearing. The chairman said that Dr Shumway experienced a mental breakdown and this led to his statement about the fake measles cases.
Dr Shumway said in an email to the Board yesterday, “How you can stand behind Malo in this gross falsehood
is truly shocking. Have any of the board members tried to assess and verify the truth of his words? I kindly suggest that it is your responsibility to do so.”
Dr Shumway who left island the day after he was suspended says his return will depend on a decision by the board on his request for an appeal.
