
The official 2020 Census Report for American Samoa released yesterday by the U.S. Census Bureau pegs the territory’s population at 49,710. In 2010, American Samoa’s population was 55,519.
In the 2020, population count there were 25, 254 males (50.8%) and 24,456 females (49.2%).
Children, ages 0-17, made up 36.7 percent of the population while 6.3% was aged or older and 0.3% were 85 or older.
Outmigration is believed to be the main reason for the decline in the territory’s population.
39% of the population ages 5 and over, in households who moved between April 1, 2015 and April 1, 2020, reported “other” as their primary reason for moving. Reasons for moving included employment, military, housing, to attend school, family-related, natural disaster and other.
88.7% of the population, ages 25 and older, had a high school degree or higher, and 13.3% had a bachelor’s degree or higher; the most common bachelor’s degree was in education.
On the economic side, median household income did not show much change from $28,539 in 2009 to $28,352 in 2020.
