Members of the public are concerned about the poor state of the Tupua Tamasese Meaole hospital at Moto’otua.
Samoa Observer reports the condition of rooms and wards inside the multi-million tālā buildings have deteriorated and the damages are visible.
A visit by the newspaper to the hospital last week confirmed the sorry state of the hospital facilities, like broken and leaking ceilings, molded air conditioning, broken beds in some of the wards, not enough beds for all the sick patients and unsanitary state of restrooms in the hospital.
A man, who only identified himself as Mark and who is currently looking after his sick mother at the hospital, said he was disappointed to see the conditions of the facilities up-close.
“I finally got to see and confirm the concerns raised by people who have been coming to the national hospital. I understand it’s not a hotel but sick people need to be in a healthy environment, hence why it’s important to have the facilities upgraded.”
The Samoa Observer also found that there were not enough beds in the maternity wards.
Efforts by the newspaper to obtain comments from the Ministry of Health Director General, Aiono Dr. Alec Ekeroma, have not been successful.
The Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital at Moto’otua was opened in 2013 as part of a project funded by a $128 million loan from China’s Exim Bank.
