The commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the American Samoa Legislature will be held later than the date of the convening of the first Fono, which is believed to be October 26, 1948.

According to the co-chairman of the Fono’s 75th anniversary celebration, Rep. Vailoata Amituanai, the event is being pushed back to November to coincide with the completion of the new Fono building.

According to the faipule, the celebration was initially planned for October to coincide with the inaugural Fono and have the dedication of the new Fale Fono when the project is completed. But the Fono leaders have decided to celebrate the two events together.

While the program hasn’t been finalized, Vailoata says its planned for a whole week with various events each day. A commemorative book for the 75th year is being compiled by the Legislative Reference Bureau, jubilee rings are being ordered, there’s a ball and possibly a fautasi race.

The budget for the Fono jubilee included in the FY2023 budget is $1 million.

Senator Faiivae Alex Iuli was co-chair of the Jubilee Committee but he has been appointed as the new Western District Governor, effective last Friday.
