EMS personnel were thankful for the checks they received Friday for paid time off accrued while EMS was under the LBJ Hospital.

At the same time, some were taken aback by the amount of taxes deducted from their compensation.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, one EMS technician said her pay was $4,000 but tax deductions totaled $2,000. “I’m thankful and grateful, but I wish they didn’t deduct that much tax,” she said.

Two others who shared their views said, they were happy to get some extra money but wished the tax deductions weren’t so high.

“At last we’ve been paid for all the leave we couldn’t take because we had to work.” And they’re happy they got it during EMS week.

The checks that were released Friday were the first batch of the Paid Time Off for EMS.
