Each year about 700 people die from boating accidents nationally. Drowning accounts for 489 deaths, while injuries requiring treatment beyond first aid total 2,641.
As part of National Boating Safety Week, the US Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Auxiliary cite these statistics to get peoples thinking about safety before they venture in the water this summer.
