Last Friday evening, March 24, the Alpha Eta chapter of the Sigma Kappa Delta (SKD) English Honor Society at ASCC held its first Literary Festival.

This year’s festival was titled “From Page to Stage” and was held at the ASCC Multipurpose Center with an attentive audience comprised mostly of fellow students, family and friends, as well as a few members of the ASCC administration and faculty.

The focus of the festival was to showcase original poetry, prose and artwork drawn from the SKD publication, “Pacific Voices.”

The SKD compiles this literary journal of original student poetry, art, and prose in the fall semester each school year.

On the stage performing poetry were:

• Cherinalei Simanu
• Ayjah Leo
• Destiny Savusa
• Greg Zemby
• Hadassah Mageo-Umi
• Joffrey Maalona
• Karoline Ilimaleota
• Kenicia Godinet

In addition to original poetry presentations, a small art exhibit by students who submit artwork that is printed in “Pacific Voices,” was set up adjacent to the poetry performances.

Maranatha Tanuvasa, Deliah Paopao, Amberlina Feleti, and Anderina Anoai displayed a series of paintings that highlighted traditional motifs and designs on abstract acrylic backgrounds.

These striking and original canvasses matched the themes of culture and identity being performed by poets on stage.

SGA President and SKD member, Luciano Fuataaga the MC for the festival commented, “For the art exhibit, when I first entered, I could not stop smiling, [the night] was an incredible experience… each and every one of the poets and artists were exceptional!”

Chapter advisor Ruta’ Tauiliili-Mahuka and co-advisor Ninna Balauro are looking forward to hosting next year’s event to show more original student poetry and artwork.
