A Samoan student was crowned the 2023 Poetry Out Loud champion in the state of Alaska, last week.

Brigitta Palepa Taaga, originally of Laulii, is the daughter of Ana Hefa and the late Deacon Isidore Taaga. She attended Laulii Elementary School before moving to Alaska, where she now attends West Anchorage High School.
She was one of 10 semi-finalists who competed in the state’s Poetry Out Loud Contest, and then went on to clinch first place among five finalists. Here’s an excerpt from one of the poems she recited for the competition.
