It’s now up to the Senate, whether to approve a bill which calls for coaches, sports officials and organizations, organizing sports events to undergo an annual concussion recognition course.

A bill, which would require this, was approved in final reading by a unanimous 13-0 vote in the House of Representatives this morning. It now goes to the Senate for review.

During a hearing on the bill this week, House members asked the Director of Education Talauega Dr. Samasoni Asaeli about the possibility of the government providing insurance coverage for athletes, to cover medical costs when they’re injured in sports.

The director said, there’s no question that this is needed, however, there are many complexities that make it difficult to offer at this time. He said, this bill is one solution to try and minimize injuries that would have a long lasting impact on athletes.

The House approved a bill for a concussion recognition course in the 36th Legislature, but the Senate killed it.
