Who’s the first group of helpers to arrive after any disaster, natural or man made? Almost always it’s the Red Cross, one of the oldest volunteer organizations internationally.

This year marks the centennial year of the Red Cross in American Samoa.

Each year, March is dedicated as National Red Cross Month with a focus on getting volunteers and also fundraising to carry out the Red Cross mission of helping disaster victims.

For its 100th anniversary, the American Samoa Red Cross is aiming to raise $100,000 to go towards the pool of funding that American Samoa benefits from.

The major centennial celebration is scheduled for Flag Day. About 4 VIPs from the Hawaii Red Cross Chapter will be on island during the celebration.

The American Samoa Veterans Association were the first to pledge their support of the American Red Cross centennial by providing decorations for the fence around the Red Cross premises in Tafuna.

The American Samoa Telecommunications Authority is the charity’s major sponsor for the centennial. The Sosaiete o Faafafine i Amerika Samoa’s annual beauty pageant this year is dedicated to the American Red Cross’ centennial. The same goes for all the Flag Day activities by the American Samoa Rugby Union.

Chairman of the Red Cross Centennial Celebration Committee, Poe Mageo invites the public to join events planned for National Red Cross Month.

You can sign up as a volunteer or drop of a donation at the Red Cross headquarters in Tafuna.
