After a tour of the US Coast Cutter Juniper that was in port, Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata, yesterday, underscored the vital role that the Coast Guard plays “in keeping the oceans safe, including right here in American Samoa.”

On board the cutter, she and her staff met with Admiral Michael Day, Commander of the 14th District Honolulu, and the Juniper’s commanding officer, Commander Timothy Bonner.

Discussions centered on the USCG role in general and particularly in the South Pacific, the role American Samoa has in that, possibilities for the future, and keeping respective offices in close communication along with the features and duties of the Juniper, a 225-foot seagoing buoy tender.

“I’m delighted that Admiral Day has been here to see our excellent natural Harbor in person, and I know our Territory will work well with the Coast Guard for many years to come,” Uifa’atali concluded. “A strong Coast Guard presence in the South Pacific is an important representation of U.S. commitment in the region.”
