The American Red Cross American Samoa (ARCAS) is gearing up for a milestone event this year—the celebration of its 100th anniversary.

The volunteer organization is commemorating a century of sustaining and advancing the American Red Cross’ mantra of preventing and alleviating human suffering by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

The theme for the centennial celebration is “A Century of Alofa” (Seneturi 0 Alofaaga).

Last week the board of directors and volunteers came together to launch its awareness campaign and corporate fundraising.

There are many exciting events scheduled as part of the celebration—such as a Talk Show in February, hosted by Fatima Langilde and Poe Mageo, who are both board members and volunteers for the Red Cross; A 100 Years Exhibition sponsored by the history students of Tafuna High School; and the Annual Thanksgiving Church Service in March to celebrate the National Red Cross Month.

The church service is to be held at the Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa in Pavaia’i led by Rev. Reupena Alo.

Chairman of the Centennial Celebration, Poe Mageo says, “Perhaps the biggest challenge is to raise 100K to continue the mandated mission of this humanitarian charity in American Samoa. Thus, a fundraising campaign is underway to solicit funds from the community to sustain the American Red Cross’s line of work as it has for the last century.”

Volunteers are welcomed to join their weekly meetings and to take part of this exciting event. For more information, please call the local Red Cross office at 699-6011.
