A United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia, was diverted to Pago Pago International Airport early this morning after developing mechanical problems.

The Boeing 787 jet was carrying 230 passengers, who are now waiting for a relief flight to arrive from Australia at midnight tonight.

Airport Manager Tavita Fuimaono says, Hawaiian Airlines is taking charge of the ground handling operations, flight crew, and passengers while here.

Some of the passengers have been taken to Tradewinds, some are on sightseeing tours of the island, but most of the travelers have opted to remain at the airport.

Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga is reported to have given instructions to ASG departments and agencies to provide basic necessities—like water for the passengers who are reported to be mainly Australians.

The relief flight from Australia is set to arrive at midnight tonight, with parts to repair the grounded aircraft and it will then depart for Sydney at 3 tomorrow morning.
