Former 49er Seiuli Jesse Sapolu has congratulated Samoan Leslie Tui Gabriel on becoming the women’s head volleyball coach for the Washington Huskies.
Calling her a trailblazer, Seiuli explains that Leslie is the daughter of former 49er Super Bowl Champion, Manu Tuiasosospo.
He says, her appointment is “a proud moment for our (Samoan) community.”
The Settle Times reports: UW announced Monday that assistant coach and former player Leslie Gabriel has been named the program’s 9th head coach.
Gabriel has been with the Huskies for 26 years and is a sister of UW football legend Marques Tuiasosospo. She is only the second former Huskie player to serve as coach.
UW athletic director Jen Cohen said, “As a former standout UW volleyball student athlete, Tui embodies what it means to be a Husky. She has been a part of the program’s biggest moments as a player and coach including a national championship and many deep NCAA tournament runs.”
