Samoa’s official population has reached 205,557, a four percent increase since the last count in 2016 of 195,979, with women still outliving men.
The official report of the Samoa Population Housing Census 2021 released by the Samoa Bureau of Statistics, this week, shows 51 percent are male and 49 percent are female.
However, in terms of life expectancy, females are living longer than men.
The report says, females are expected to live longer for 77 years compared to 74 years for males.
The numbers show that 78% or 160,334 people live on Upolu island.
“Faleata on Upolu is the most populated district and Falealupo on Savaii is the least populated district (0.4 per cent) among the 51 political districts,” the report recorded.
“The median or average of the total population was 22 years…The youthful population indicated continuous demands for developments catering for the needs of the young population such as education, health, and employment opportunities.”
