Following the Atoa o Samoa talks in Apia, KHJ News has received reports that some major businesses in Samoa would be setting up shop in the territory.

The companies who mentioned about possibly expanding to the territory are in the hardware business, farming, grocery retail and wholesale, banking and manufacturing.

Specific names mentioned are the Ah Liki’s and Frankie’s, which have a wide range of companies including poultry and vegetable farming, supermarkets, pharmacy, beer and soft drink manufacturing.

KHJ News also received enquiries from local businesses in these sectors asking, if we have any information about businesses from Samoa starting ventures here.

When asked, Director of Commerce, Petti Matila said, “Some businesses in Samoa have expressed their interest in expanding their operations to American Samoa. However, that has yet to materialize through a registered business license to confirm that interest.”

She also advised that we inquire directly with the mentioned companies in Samoa.

KHJ News also asked the DOC Director about a supposed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with an outside investor, for development of the old Rainmaker Hotel site in Utulei. The information we received from government sources, is that the MOU was with a businessman from China.

Matila said,”There is no existing MOU with a Chinese businessman in place for the old Rainmaker Hotel site.”
