The equipment installed in 2019 for issuance of REAL ID driver’s licenses are accounted for, and they’re working.
Next week, the contractor that’s installing the system is conducting a staff training for the Office of Motor Vehicles; and according to the Deputy Commissioner of Public Safety, Terry Letuli, they hope to begin issuing REAL ID licenses next month.
American Samoa is the last remaining US jurisdiction to issue the federally mandated licenses. It will be the passport for US citizens and nationals to travel interstate, and get into federal buildings.
Letuli said that there was a two-year setback because of travel restrictions resulting from the COVID pandemic, but they are now back on track.
He says that the contractor, Ledgelight, has tested the equipment which was installed in 2019 and all are working. Next Monday and Tuesday, OMV will be closed while the contractor conducts training for the staff.
A notice from DPS says:
“The Department of Public Safety informs the public that the Office of Motor Vehicle (OMV) will be closed on Monday 10/31/22 and Tuesday 11/1/22 due to equipment upgrade and personnel training. If you have any questions call DPS at 633-1111.”
Three representatives of Ledgelight company have been on island for a week.
Two people were hired back in 2019 in preparation for the start up and they have remained with OMV. Letuli says, they are the only additional employees needed.
The final deadline for the territory to become REAL ID compliant is May of next year.
