ASTCA seeks grant to build redundancy marine cable to Samoa

The American Samoa Telecommunications Authority is applying for funding to construct a backup undersea fiber cable connection to Samoa.

The applications is being made through the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), Enabling Middle Mile Broadband Infrastructure Program.

A press release from ASTCA say, the project proposes to design, supply, and install 133km of submarine cable system to connect from Tutuila, American Samoa, to the Independent State of Samoa and will be carried out in two phases.

The first phase consists of a marine survey, cable manufacture and cable deployment-marine operations.

The second phase will be landing stations, terrestrial cable placement and ancillary equipment from Tutuila, American Samoa to Samoa.

ASTCA has prepared proposed actions and a preliminary design for the American Samoa Redundancy Cable Project, which is available for public review at www.astca.net/MiddleMile and ASTCA Main Office Building, Grants Division 4th Floor.

ASTCA has also prepared an engagement survey to help with studies on the territory’s broadband needs. Members of the public are welcome to participate in this survey at www.astca.net/MiddleMile/survey.

The comment period will close October 7th, 2022 at 11:59PM.
