As predicted the price of electricity will continue to climb.

The CEO of the American Samoa Power Authority, Wallon Young, has announced that the new Maximum Allowable Price (MAP) for fuel, will push electricity prices to a record for the month of August.

The new MAP for Ulta Low Sulfur Diesel for generators will be $5.56 per gallon – effective July 15th.

This, in turn, will push electricity rates to a new record of approximately 54.4c per KWh for August 2022.

The 54.4 cents per KWh comprise of 9.74 cents for the Base Rate and 44.66 cents for Fuel Surcharge – per KWh.

The previous record of 46.68c per KWh was set this month.

Young said, electric rates were 25.48c per kWh in January 2021, “so we are experiencing an increase of over 100% in less than 20 months.”

He added that the cost of diesel fuel is beyond ASPA’s control and “this is just one reason why ASPA must press on with its 42 MW Wind and 20 MW Solar PV Projects.”
