The village of Vailoa may be involved in efforts to prevent any further loss of lives at Leala Beach, says Director of Homeland Security Samana Semo Ve’ave’a.

He was to meet with the Acting Director of the American Samoa Search and Rescue Agency, Faamasino Upuese Galoia, to discuss what can be done immediately and long-term to avoid tragedies at the popular swimming and surfing spot.

22-year-old Niutea Jr. “NJ” Laulu perished at Papaseea or Sliding Rocks while swimming with cousins on the afternoon of June 17th. In December of 2020, 39-year-old, Aunuu Chen was also claimed by the treacherous waves at Leala. There have been other fatalities.

Homeland Security Director Samana said that they plan to post no swimming signs at Leala Beach and he hopes to involve the Vailoa aumaga in policing the beach. He said, one life lost is too many and something needs to be done—now—to stop any further loss of lives.
