Students can earn credits in DOE summer school

KHJ News followed up with the Director of Education Talauega, Dr. Samasoni Asaeli, regarding high school seniors who were not able to graduate and what DOE is doing to help these students.

In his response earlier this week, the DOE Director said that it is policy that the only person that can change a student’s  grade is the teacher.

Any change must be done with proper justification.

We had asked for the number of students who failed and didn’t have the necessary grades to graduate, but this was not provided in the Director’s email response.

Regarding assistance for these students, Talauega said that they are starting summer school next week to provide opportunities for students who did not graduate, to make up for at least 1 credit.

This program will run daily for 6 weeks, which is equivalent to contact hours for one semester. If the students are short .5 to 1 credit, they can participate and if they pass, they will be issued their diplomas. If students need more than one credit, they can either return in the new school year to retake that failed course(s) or take GED.
