Six COVID cases reported from Faleasao village, Manu’a

The Department of Health is expected to issue an official statement about the positive COVID cases in Manu’a this morning.

But KHJ News has been able to confirm from ASG representatives and village officials in Manu’a, that 6 family members have contracted the virus.

Tests at Tau Clinic yesterday confirmed this.

Manu’a had been COVID free since the first community case was confirmed on Tutuila , February 21st.

Dr. Elizabeth Lauvao, DOH’s Acting Clinical Director said, they will give a report after a meeting with the Governor this morning.

According to information from our sources in Manu’a, the positive cases include children and elderly, some of whom are experiencing breathing problems.

KHJ News also received confirmation that there’s no oxygen supply at the Tau Clinic but a supply is expected to arrive on the Manu’atele.

The positive individuals have been instructed to isolate at home.

  • In-person classes for schools in Manu’a started earlier this month but yesterday Director of Education, Talauega Dr. Samasoni Asaeli approved the return to online classes for Manu’a High School and the elementary schools on Tau island. Olosega Elementary will not be affected, as Ofu and Olosega remain COVID free.

A notice sent to Manu’a High School students and staff yesterday said, “DOE Director Dr. Talauega Samasoni Asaeli, has given approval for Manu’a High School to restart full remote learning starting tomorrow, April 28th.

“There will be no in-class school. Please follow the bell schedule for this week for the remote learning schedule. Students’ laptops and chargers will be delivered tomorrow by the admin team. All Manu’a High School staff will remain at home.”
