No new coronavirus cases in Samoa

There were no new coronavirus cases after testing of 263 persons who handled a flight from Brisbane, Australia last Wednesday.

There were 73 passengers on the flight of whom 15 tested positive and are now in isolation at special wards at the national hospital, Motootua.

“As of today, the 15 Covid positive cases are closely monitored in isolation and are cared for,” said the Ministry of Health yesterday.

The government declared a nationwide lockdown starting at 6pm Saturday until 6pm Monday.

Yesterday all churches were closed, the fish market which usually attracts a crowd early morning, was empty, and small shops, petrol stations and eateries were closed.

In the township of Apia, police roadblocks were set up at usually busy streets to monitor vehicles violating the ban and checking on permits from the National Emergency Operations Center  for  vehicles that were on the road.

Police can issue on the spot fines of up to $2,000 tālā for those who break the ban on all but vehicles for essential services.

More than 50 warnings have been issued for breaches of SOE Orders since the start of the lockdown. KHJ News understands that one driver without a NEOC a permit who was stopped three times by police on Saturday night has been fined.
