Local ranger graduates in NPS Future Leaders Program

A local ranger with the National Park of American Samoa, Bert Fuiava, was one of the graduates of the National Park Service Future Leaders Program.

He is believed to be the first local ranger to participate and successfully graduate.

Fuiava was among park rangers from the Western region who graduated in the Future Leaders Class of 2021 last Friday.

The graduation was originally set for Atlanta but due to Covid, it was held virtually.

Fuiava who is in his 13th year with the National Park of American Samoa, participated from the NPS office in Pago Pago.

The Future Leaders Program aims to prepare the next generation of National Park Service supervisors. The objective is to attain a diverse pool of candidates from multiple disciplines, with an interest in supervision.

Fuiava went through ten months of intensive learning and development and applied learning focusing on various aspects of supervision and leadership.

Classes were delivered through residential, online, and WebEx sessions and includes an assigned mentor after graduation.

Fuiava is a graduate of Manu’a High School and the American Samoa Community College obtained his Bachelors degree in Biology from the University of Hawaii and Masters degree in resource management from Virginia Tech.

He is currently the Manu’a District Ranger for the National Park of American Samoa
