Senators reject bill to restrict use of cell phones while driving

Senators outright rejected the administration bill which proposes to restrict the use of cell phones while driving.

Senators were in agreement that the bill was incomplete and a glaring omission in their view what that the bill did not or provide a penalty for the offense of using a cell phone while operating a vehicle.

The bill was on the Senate calendar for final reading but the chairman of the Public Safety Committee Senator Faiivae Alex Godinet made a motion to suspend the third reading.

Senate President Tuaolo Manaia Fruean told him the only option was to take a vote on the proposed legislation.

Senator Togiola Tulafono then moved to reject the bill.

All 13 senators voted to kill the bill.
