Want to learn a new skill this summer? How about sewing or wood carving?
Non-profit group the American Samoa Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence (ASCADSV) is hosting a training class for anyone interested in learning the skills of sewing or wood carving. The classes will start on Monday, June 14, 2021 for six weeks, ending on July 23rd, 2021.
Classes are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday. New this year is an evening sewing class that will be held every Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
ASCADSV or the Coalition is a Non-Government/Profit Organization (NGO) that was founded in 2004. The group’s mission is to not only to protect, improve and advocate for survivors of violence and low-income individuals but also to initiate and support programs to improve their living standards.
ASCADSV executive director Matautia Liliu Tapuai-Mailo explained that through the sewing and wood carving trainings, the Coalition hopes to empower participants and their families to become self-sufficient, either by working for companies needed these skills or also becoming their own bosses and start a business.
She said sewing class has been going strong for three consecutive years and interest continues to grow as evident in the demand and expansion of the sewing industry locally.
Twenty seven women have already registered for the class and there are a few remaining slots available until Wednesday, June 16, 2021. For wood carving, Mrs. Tapuai-Mailo said this would be a good opportunity for the youth to learn this cultural skill if they’re not doing anything this summer.
“I encourage our youth to come out and learn from wood carver Mr. Fetu Leota,” she said. “This can be useful skill to have in the future.”
The wood carving class will be conducted at the Coalition’s office location at the Lions Park on Tolu Street.
The official opening of both the sewing and wood carving training classes will be held Monday, July 14, 2021 at 8 a.m. at the DYWA center in Tafuna. For more information, please call 699-0171, 252-4805, 254-2168 or email ascadsv1@gmail.com.
