
It’s not just StarKist Samoa that’s having difficulty keeping workers on the job.
local businesses are also facing high absenteeism and employees just not showing up for work.
And the reason is because, as Lt Governor Talauega Eleasalo Ale put it, employees are receiving “free money from the government” via the stimulus payments and also increased social benefits like food stamps.
At last week’s cabinet meeting Lt Governor Talauega sounded a word of caution and asked directors to counsel employees, families and friends to use their stimulus windfalls to get ahead.

The Lt Governor suggested that the banks should also offer advice on saving money and provide incentives for people who open bank accounts with their stimulus checks.
