The acting director of Youth and Women Affairs, Dr. Salote Aoelua Fanene is currently seeking treatment off island and a request has been made to the Fono  leaders to postpone her confirmation hearings.

Senate President Tuaolo Fruean had said last week that the Governor’s Office would be sending a request to withdraw her nomination.

When asked about this, the Communications Officer at the Governor’s Office Fiafia Sunia  said Governor Lemanu in a letter dated January 20 asked the Senate President and House Speaker to reschedule confirmation hearings for the cabinet member.

He disclosed that Dr. Fanene is currently off island due to a medical emergency.

Citing patient privacy regulations, Sunia said the Governor’s Office will refrain from comment or address any speculation on the type of medical emergency Dr. Fanene is tending to.

“We are hopeful upon her safe return home that she will “heed the call of the Fono as per protocol.”

Dr. Fanene will remain as Acting Director until her return to the territory.

Governor Lemanu offered words of encouragement for Dr. Fanene.

“I also want to take this opportunity to let Dr. Fanene know that our prayers are with her, and look forward to her safe return home.”
