A joint operation by the Samoa Ministry of Customs and Ministry of Police has landed a 57 year old man in custody when a shipment of marijuana from the United States of America was intercepted last Friday.

Samoa Observer reports that the incoming freight was detected by the joint K9 Unit, which is composed of Customs and Police.

A release from the Ministry of Customs and Revenue also said the man will be charged with offences relating to the seizure.

“The public is reminded as we head into the festive season that despite [state of emergency] restrictions, the work for border security and community safety is ongoing, and […these] offences will not be tolerated,” the statement warned.

“The [Ministry of Customs and Revenue] and the [Police] will pursue joint charges of the offence committed and continue to work collaboratively for the security of Samoa and its communities.”

The port operation comes after armed Police seized 4000 marijuana plants from plantations deep in the mountains of Satapuaala and Faleatiu last Tuesday.

There has been no comment from Samoa Police Service on the operation.
