People have been crowding the Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources at the old TAOA Office in Pago Pago to apply for funding made available under the CARES Act for fishery type businesses and families who depend on fishing for their livelihood, impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

American Samoa was awarded $2.5 million and the application period started November 9 and was announced by Maria Vaofanua of DMWR in an interview on KVZK-TV News the day after applications opened.

No other media was made aware that DMWR was receiving applications for this grant and who was eligible.

Efforts to get information from Acting Director Salaina Tuimavave and Ms Vaofanua have been unsuccessful.

But thanks to our friends at KVZK-TV we can present part of Ms Vaofanua’s interview where she explains the categories of people and businesses who can qualify for these funds.
