Around 10:30 this morning the container ship that’s been in the news daily due to three crew members on board testing positive for coronavirus, Fesco Askold, left port.

This is after a 48-hour non stop loading and off loading operation.

The 11 local stevedores and dock workers who handled the vessel’s container load are now at the Department of Health Quarantine Center at Tafuna.

Epidemiologist Dr. Aifili John Tufa says they are to be tested for coronavirus on Friday and a decision will then be made as to when they can go home.

The three crew members who tested positive for coronavirus remained on board and never set foot on shore while the ship was at the dock. They and the rest of the 17 crew members are all reported to be well, with no one showing symptoms of the deadly virus.

Because of the situation with the Fesco Askold and the suspected coronavirus case from Samoa, Port Administration is heightening its procedures for the seaport.

Deputy Director Christopher King said everyone entering the port will be required to wear a mask. Dock workers will also be required to wear gloves and other protective gear.

King said all areas of the seaport and airport where members of the public visit will also be subject to disinfectant by the local company Island Safety and Sanitation, just as another level of protection.
