
The Samoa Government has revealed that 17 people are now in ‘managed quarantine’ after having worked on the Fesco Askold when it was docked in Apia for a day before coming here.
At a media conference today the interim chairperson of the National Emergency Operations Centre, along with Director General of Health and CEO of Samoa Ports Authority fronted up to explain the process taken when cargo ships visit.
They confirmed that the government is considering the matter as very low risk and will not be conducting any further contact tracing.
Leausa Dr Take Naseri Director General of Health said the containers which came off the ship had all been disinfected as is the usual practice and added none of the ship’s crew are allowed onshore at any time during their visit.
Meanwhile a second school in Samoa has closed down to await the outcome of the COVID-19 scare.
Le Amosa o Savavau private school at Vaitele closed its doors after telling parents they wanted to ensure safety of all students.
Principal, Fitimaula Donna Le Tagaloa told parents on Tuesday afternoon of the school’s temporary closure until further notice.
She said the decision was made after reports from Pago Pago that confirmed three sailors were tested positive of Covid-19.
The first school to cancel was St Peter Chanel, an elementary school in Moamoa.
