Meetings are already underway in the lead up to January 3rd when a new House of Representatives and Senate are sworn in, the same day that the new governor and lt governor will take their oath of office.

Some of the five new elected members of the House have been contacted by House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale and selected members who are looking to put a stop to Savali’s stronghold on the leadership post.

Incumbent lawmakers who won re-election Tuesday told KHJ News that at this stage they’re keeping an open mind and will be willing to listen to both sides.

In the last Speaker election members who were not on Savali’s side were Vailoata Amituana’i, Larry Sanitoa, Andra Samoa and Vesiai Poyer.

The Senate President position will also be up for grabs.

Senators are selected from among ranking chiefs of districts through consensus.

Generally the district meetings begin after the general elections with the idea that all would have been selected before the date of the swearing in.
