Samoa Eyes Company for Off Island Exports

The Samoa Government is looking at forming an export company with farmers as shareholders to market and export its products overseas.

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi told TV3 this week this will also include products currently being developed by the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa – SROS.

“This is the only way to tap into the overseas markets, because local companies are not interested. Either they are scared or worried they’re making bad investments,” he said.

Tuilaepa praised the work being done by SROS which was established in 2005 to develop local products to be exported overseas.

So far SROS has produced flour made from breadfruit, oil made from avocado and more recently ethanol from taro for sanitizers.

Tuilaepa said many more products can be made from local crops and plants for the export market giving farmers other avenues to earn money from farming.

He said his government has played a major role in ensuring that farmers have easy access to their farms by fixing roads to plantations and farms.

“This is the [Human Rights Protection Party’s] foresight to assist the farmers in the long run, and developing of crops, now that [S.R.O.S.] has a commercial factory.”
