The newest party in Samoan politics became the first to register a candidate for the April 2021 General Elections when nominations opened in Savaii yesterday.

Samoa Observer reports that Fa’atuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) were the early birds when they registered nominations for Va’aaoao Salu Alofipo of Saleaula.

He is looking to wrestle the Gagaemauga No.1 electoral constituency seat currently held by the ruling Human Rights Protection Party.

Electoral Commissioner Faimalomatumua Matthew Lemisio, confirmed a total of 23 candidates from Savai’i have been nominated on the first day of nominations.

F.A.S.T. registered 13 candidates and HRPP registered 10 on the first day of the nomination period which ends October 23, 2020.

Faimalomatumua confirmed some opening day jitters with some candidates turning up without some of the needed documentation to register.

“If they bring in just their passports, it’s really hard to tell the stamps and it prolongs the process, and we had to ask some of the candidates to obtain the records from the Immigration. ”

He said it would speed up the process and will make it easier for them to screen the requirements needed.
