Congresswoman Aumua Amata wished the Fijian people a happy and blessed Fiji Day, as this October 10th is the 50th anniversary of Fiji’s independence.

“Congratulations and malo lava to Fiji upon this important marker in your history, the 50th Anniversary of Independence,” said Aumua Amata.

“Congratulations also to President H.E. Ratu Jioji Konrote. From our beautiful islands to yours, we wish all of you the best as you enjoy and celebrate your special day. My father, High Chief Uifaatali Governor Peter T. Coleman, was good friends with one of your leading statesmen, the late H.E. Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, who was Chief Minister at the time of Fiji’s independence, the first Prime Minister and later President. All through the Pacific, we owe trailblazers like them, who showed the way to local leadership in many Pacific Islands.

“I’ve had the occasion to be in your lovely and welcoming country, and I enjoyed my time there. I know the U.S. and Fiji will continue to be friends and partners. I trust better days of travel, trade and tourism will soon return to your shores. Happy Fiji Day to all!”
