The President of the Tafuna High School Parents Teacher Association Will Spitzenburg asking a question at the Tafuna High School “Let Your Voices be Heard,” gubernatorial forum held this morning.

The Team of Gaoteote/Faiivae was not able to attend due to “work commitments” as announced by the emcee.

Candidate for governor Nuanuolefeagaiga Saoluaga Nua was reported to be under the weather but his running mate Tapumanaia Galu Satele attended. However Tapumanaia had to leave after the first hour of the forum to go to Manu’a.

This left just the teams of Lemanu/Talauega and I’aulualo/Tapaau to answer this particular question.

For the THS forum, questions were not provided to the candidates beforehand.

Lemanu responded in Samoan that we should be thankful to God that we don’t have coronavirus here, and also the governor and administration for the action taken to protect the territory.

He said decisions made by the administration are not easy and they are made with tears and broken hearts.

He said he and the governor also have relatives who are stranded off island and dying to come home but they as leaders have to make decisions that are good for the whole territory and not for families and a select few. Lemanu’s wife Ella who is in the US Army, has been stranded in Honolulu since March.

The lt governor said there are pros and cons to returning schools to five days a week, as the private schools. He referred to the generous federal funding that the territory has received.

He said the funding can adequately prepare schools for virtual classes, equipping classrooms with wifi access and also students with what they need for online classes.

Lemanu said a decision on returning schools to their full schedule will depend on the status of the coronavirus disease, but emphasized that for now we should continue to prepare for when there is a case.

Iaulualo said at this time when we don’t have coronavirus in the territory their team supports returning to normal class scheduled that is five days a week in school.

But at the same time the Department of Health and Department of Education should have plans of what to do when there is a case and schools have to shut down.

He said the territory has 200 gigs of bandwidth via the Hawaiki Cable and every child should have internet access. He said their team have a plan to achieve this.

His running mate Tapaau Dan Mageo Aga , gave the rest of their response.
