Flags in the territory are flying at half staff in honor of Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

“On September 18, Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away after a long battle with metastatic pancreatic cancer,” Governor Lolo Moliga said in a memo issued today.

“Justice Ginsburg was a pioneer in the fight for equal rights, having spent decades as a fierce litigator prior to joining the bench. For the past 27 years, she served as an Associate Justice in the Supreme Court as the second woman to ever be appointed to that position.”

The governor said Justice Ginsburg leaves behind a legacy as “a principled advocate and a role model for future generations.

“Her intellect and collegiality combined with her numerous accomplishments have left a lasting impression on the Supreme Court and the country as a whole. She is a unique and important figure in the history of the nation and her life and career are worthy of recognition and honor.”

In keeping with a proclamation issued by President Trump, Governor Lolo orders that all flags of the United States and American Samoa throughout the territory be lowered to half staff in honor of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

“The flags are to be lowered immediately and remain so until the day of her interment.”

“American Samoa further offers its heartfelt condolence to the family, friends and colleagues of Justice Ginsburg.”

Congresswoman Aumua Amata said in a statement Friday after learning of the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg:

“Justice Ginsburg lived a wonderful American life story. Her career and her strength in adversity became an inspiration, especially to so many women and girls. She was committed to her convictions, yet she was dear friends with Justices who had different strong viewpoints. That can be an enduring example.

“Justice Ginsburg deserves to be highly honored for serving an exceptional 27 years on the Supreme Court. Our prayers go out on behalf of her loved ones and millions of Americans who treasured her as an icon. May God bless our country, and give wisdom and integrity to the next Justice to take on the responsibility of this public trust.”
