Two Charged in Alleged Rape of Mentally Challenged Girl

Two men arrested last week by police on allegations they tried to rape a mentally challenged girl have waived their rights to a preliminary examination and will have their pretrial conference next month.

Luteru Pedro is facing one count of attempted rape and Tavita Tuigamala faces one count of felonious restraint.

The court has set bail at $5,000 each.

Police responded to a call at the Tafuna Police Station on the night of August 20 that there was a fight in front of a store at Nu’uuli.

The victim’s sister told Police about the attempted rape and that she and her daughter had intervened and started fighting the suspects.

They told Police the two men ran off and the sister then took the victim away from the scene and with help from Police took her to LBJ for an examination while police continued the search for the two suspects.

A bystander told police he knew the men and took them to their home where they were found sitting in the front.

They were then taken in for questioning where they were charged and kept in custody.
