Today is the deadline for candidates intending to have their names on the ballot for the November 3rd general elections to file their nominating petitions with the Election Office.
The official closing time for candidates to file is 4:30 pm today.
Election Commissioner Dr. Lealofi Uiagalelei has confirmed that they are going ahead with changes already announced, allowing those wishing to run for the gubernatorial, congressional and House of Representatives Election who are currently stuck off island due to the COVID-19 border closures to have local representatives file their nominating petitions.
In addition the Election Office is accepting requests for absentee ballots for residents who are registered voters but cannot be in the territory on Election Day due to the border closures, to cast their ballots absentee.
The Election Commissioner said he understands the Fono is proposing legislation for these changes but regardless, the Election Office is moving ahead, as it has the legal authority to do so.
