The Commissioner of Public Safety has been empowered to repossess all government vehicles which are not being used in accordance with the governor’s vehicle policy. This prohibits deputy directors from taking ASG vehicles home.
Governor Lolo Moliga spells this out in an August 24th letter  to all directors.
“It is rather troubling that seven years and eight months into our administration the abuse of government vehicles has not ceased,” he said.
He reminded directors of a memo on Cost Containment Measures he issued on January 4, 2013 which restricted 24/7 use of government vehicles to only directors.
Vehicles used after hours were to be requested each time the need arises. And 24 hour stickers were issued with justified essential use after hours.
Lolo observed that many deputy directors are now going home in government cars and are seen on the road at night conducting personal business.  He said directors as the head of their departments are personally held accountable to ensure that the vehicle policy is followed.
“We are not going to let up on this issue because to do so is to admit that we don’t have the fortitude and the discipline to enforce restrictions on government vehicle use,” he admonished.
Lolo said the commissioner is authorized to repossess all vehicles not are not used in compliance with the vehicle policy, which prohibits deputy directors from taking vehicles home.
He ordered that all vehicles are to be parked at the office compound over night.
Vehicles which are needed for authorized activities after hours will be picked up from
the office compound. And after they’re used, are to be returned to the designated parking areas.  No exceptions.
