Yesterday, KHJ News reported that one of the payments from the $35.1 million COVID- 19 grant for ASG from the CARES Act was $200.000 for the Soliai family in connection with the alternative road that Governor Lolo Moliga is proposing for Nu’uuli.
This payment was listed in a report that ASG Treasurer Ueligitone Tonumaipe’a and Budget Director Catherine Saelua distributed to House members at a hearing earlier this week.
A member of the Soliai Family contacted KHJ News to report that they did not receive such a check.  The spokesman also said that family members have not given approval for the use of their lands for the alternate road which is intended to alleviate traffic congestion around the Laufou area.
Also with regards to the checks of $20,000 and $10,000 given to the Fono leaders, senators and representatives for their offices,  the only name that appears on the reports as having returned their check to Treasury is Rep Samuel Meleisea.
However both Reps Veseai Samuel Poyer and Larry Sanitoa have receipts from Treasury of their $10,000 checks being returned.
When Sanitoa asked during the hearing why their names were still showing on the reports,  Treasurer Tonumaipe’a said that a section at the back of the report with the details of the expenditures lists those who have returned their checks.
But in KHJ News’ review of the disbursement details there’s no record of the $10,000 checks that Vesiai and Sanitoa have returned and received receipts for.
