A 50 year old man has been charged with first and third degree assault for allegedly attacking his brother with a machete back in 2016.

Timote Afemui made his initial appearance in District Court earlier this week.

Police were called to an incident at the Tongan community compound at Pava’ia’i on September 7,  2016 and found the victim who said he was making coffee when his brother burst in the door demanding to know what he had done with his daughter.

The victim said he was trying to ask his brother what he meant when the defendant suddenly swung the machete at his face and he dodged.

A second swing of the weapon hit his right hand between his thumb and finger when he tried to block the machete.

After a third swing he ran out of the house and went to a neighbor’s house for help.

Police said they could not find the attacker who had left the scene when they arrived.

The attack allegedly stemmed from the defendant’s suspicions that his brother had sexual relations with his step daughter.

Police investigations revealed that the defendant had tried to persuade his stepdaughter who was 18 at the time to have sex with him but she refused.

The girl told police that she never had sex with the defendant’s brother. She said when she refused to have sex with the defendant and denied having sex with his brother, he became angry.

The defendant is alleged to have locked the girl in the room while he went looking for his brother and attacked him with the machete.

The girl managed to get out of the room and ran to a neighbor’s house for help.

It’s not clear why the criminal case against the defendant took four years to file.
