The old Communications Office Building in Fagatogo has been demolished to make way for a new courthouse.

Previous plans were to relocate part of the District Court to the second floor of the building however according to statements by Governor Lolo Moliga at Friday’s cabinet meeting, Public Works said that it appears the structure is not safe.

So the decision was made to tear it down and a new courthouse will be built at the site.

Public Works is drawing up plans for the new building after which construction work should begin.

The governor ordered that the power to the building be turned off today and on Tuesday contractors will begin tearing down the building.

Crews were seen removing the interior of the top floor of the building last week.

Lolo said the new building will face Fagatogo village which should be more pleasing to the than the old layout which had the back of the building facing the village.

The governor told the cabinet this will be the last project for the administration and should be in use six months after they leave office.

He said the Fono building project has begun and should be completed in two years.
