Vice Speaker Fetu Fetui is insisting that the House of Representatives use subpoena powers to get the Commissioner of Public Safety to appear for a hearing into a number of issues involving DPS.

Before the last Fono session adjourned, the Commissioner was a no show to a hearing of the Public Safety Committee that was looking into the territory’s growing drug problem, and also the tragedy which killed two firemen in April.

On Monday Vice Speaker Fetu proposed that the House issue a subpoena to the commissioner because he has ignored requests to attend the previous hearing.

Fetu, a former police officer has been vocal about directors and other executive branch officials not showing up for House hearings. He offered to accompany Rep Gafatasi Afalava and the Speaker to deliver the subpoena to Commissioner Le’i Sonny Thompson.

The House Speaker advised against taking this step unless it was absolutely necessary, but to send another request to Le’i through the usual channel. That is to go through the Governor’s Office.

The hearing with Commissioner Le’i and Fire Chief Cliff O’Brien is set for next Tuesday.
