County Chief Mase Akapo Akapo says the focus of village rules approved by the Vaitogi Village Council is to reduce unruly behavior and crime and promote village unity and pride.

He acknowledges that Vaitogi was becoming known for drug crimes and other unlawful incidents and the village rules are intended to clean the village of such activities.

According to the county chief since the rules went into effect June 7 there has been a big change in the village.

For example, during the evening curfew, families are in their homes for prayers by 6:05 pm.  And at 9 pm young people are no longer roaming along the road side.

The village rules also dictate that men cannot have beards or long hair and women cannot wear shorts above the knees in the village except when they play sports.

Mase explained that while they expect people of Vaitogi to adhere to these rules, their main intention and focus for now is to combat crime and deter bad behavior in the village.

He said they haven’t really enforced these rules for individuals but have noticed that young men joining the aumaga are turning up for the evening curfew enforcement with short hair and clean shaven look.

Other village rules are no loud stereos at home, on vehicles and buses, no alcohol consumption except in the home or using, buying and selling of drugs or growing marijuana,  no swimming on Sunday and no dumping of garbage anywhere in the village except in garbage bins.

All property in the village must also be kept clean with lawns groomed.

Fines are also set for each rule that’s violated.
