Churches enforce COVID-19 rules at services

With the resumption of church services under the Fifth Amended Public Health Emergency Declaration for COVID-19, it has been left up to churches to ensure that sanitation practices and social distancing are maintained during services.

In addition, the churches have to ensure that only 150 people attend.

At a hearing of the House Health Committee last week, some representatives pointed out that they have not seen much enforcement of these rules in their own churches, while others like Rep Vailiuama Steve Leasiolagi said he was in charge of writing down names and phone numbers of people attending Mass at his church in Fagatogo.

Epidemiologist for the Department of Health Dr. Afili John Tufa said these lists are very useful for contact tracing when there’s a coronavirus case.
